On 30 April 2025, Ho Chi Minh City commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the events of 30 April 1975. A major ceremony and parade brought large crowds into the city, while music, flags and public gatherings formed part of the anniversary.

The occasion invited reflection on the country's history and on the different meanings that reunification held for successive generations. Public commemorations had transformed central streets into places of shared remembrance, where ceremony and everyday civic life met.

For an international audience, the anniversary offered a way to understand Vietnam beyond headlines or historical dates. It showed how a nation's past remained visible in its public spaces and how collective rituals continued to shape the present. Formal national reunification had followed in 1976.
