On 2 February 2025, authorities in Quang Ngai announced that the traditional boat racing festival of Tinh Long Commune had been added to Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage list.
The recognition celebrated far more than a competition. It honoured a practice shaped by life beside the Tra Khuc River and by generations of families who had gathered to watch crews race.
The festival had its roots in the settlement of the region centuries earlier.
Boat racing had become a collective ritual, bringing neighbours together at the start of the lunar year. The rhythm of paddles, the energy of the riverbank and the shared anticipation gave the event its particular identity.
For Sportchase, the story illustrated how physical activity could also be a form of cultural memory. The boats carried not only competitors, but also a community's sense of place.
